What I Learned from Not Shopping for 30 Days

Last month, I challenged myself not to go shopping for thirty days. When I first started this little journey, I thought it would be a cakewalk.  It was next to impossible.  Less than 24 hours after I started my challenge, I found myself on the checkout page of ASOS and Piperlime with a cartful of things I didn't need. After a few of those episodes, I decided to unsubscribe from every online retailer and steer clear of 5th Avenue.

For the modern day woman, thirty days without shopping isn't easy. We're constantly bombarded with "buy this", "you can't live without this", "this year's hottest trend".  Always feeling like we "have" to own every trend that hits the runway.  Well, we don't.  We just need to learn how to make our wardrobe work with what we currently own.

Here are a few things I learned from not shopping for 30 days:

1.   I was absolutely addicted to shopping.  As sad as it sounds, It took me two weeks to focus on anything but clothing and shopping.
2.  My closet is full of things I don't wear. Why do I keep all these things?
3.  I have no strategy when purchasing clothes.
4.  My wardrobe is lacking tops and blouses.
5.  Black and white pieces are a great way to extend a wardrobe.
6.  The less I shopped, the more creative I became with my outfits.  I wasn't always depending on something new to show up in my wardrobe to put together an outfit.

Now, with all that being said, over the course of the month I made a list of things I wanted to add to my closet.

5 Work Flats to Survive the Summer

5 Work Flats

Working in New York City, I've learned a little trick of the trade...the shoe swap. You carry an extra pair of flats in your purse and swap them out before you get to the office. It's the only way to preserve your heels from the cobblestone, concrete and anything else you come across in NYC. Here are five pairs of flats that will look great with all your work outfits.

With the 4th of July right around the corner, I wanted to share a few outfits that would look great when you're with friends and family. We still haven't decided what we're going to do for the long weekend, but I'm crossing my fingers for a trip to the beach.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. We're ending our weekend on a high note. My husband surprised me today with a NYC staycation. I'm looking for a day out in the city and staying the night in fluffy white sheets! Keep an eye on my Instagram, I'll be sharing a few photos.

It's April 1st and time to bring out all your favorite soft pastel pieces! Here are a few pieces to update your daily spring wardrobe and your everyday 9-5 outfits. This season I'm a huge fan on mixing pastels and neutrals.

What so great about these pieces is that they can be mixed with denim, faux leather and lots of accessories. If you're typically not a "pastel" girl, try out one piece this season. You'll be surprised how much you enjoying wearing the soft color this season.

Happy April Fool's Day!

Five Perfect White Button Down Shirts for Work

Five White Blouses for Work

1. Gap $30 | 2. Ann Taylor $60 | 3. Mango $90 | 4. Equipment $208 | 5. J.Crew $158

As we transition into spring, it's always important to have a crisp white shirt hanging in your closet. The white button down is a staple for my wardrobe, I've worn it here, here and here. My favorite is the light crepe blouse from Express, however having a cotton button down in your wardrobe is always a good option. White button downs work great for a casual Friday. You can wear it with skinny jeans and head out to meet friends after work. While most people opt for a black top, white stands out and gives you a fresh and polished look. As seen above, you can tuck in your top or leave it out with a pair of skinny leather leggings. Here's a few ideas from WhoWhatWear on how to style a button down. The options are endless...

Five Work Coats under $100

Five Work Coats under $100

one :: Zara $100
two :: Warehouse $98
three :: Mango $98
four :: UNIQLO $80
five :: Forever 21 $60

 The past few weeks I've been on the prowl for the perfect coat. This time of year is the best time to find coats at half the price. This weekend I'm going to stop searching and finally pull the trigger and buy a new coat, just not sure which one I want! However, these coats worn by KIM K. are some of my favorite this season. The oversized coat is what I was looking for in my next purchase, however I adore the feminine camel belted coat and the sophisticated navy coat. Both would also make a great addition to my daily office look.

Here's another collage on OVERSIZED BOYFRIEND COATS done by blogger TORONTO SHOPOHOLIC and she talks about petite girls being able to pull off these trends.
